Dinah Washington was an American jazz and blues singer-songwriter who was a dominant figure in the music industry during the 1940s and 1950s. Born Ruth Elinor Jones on August 29, 1924, she began her career singing gospel music in her church choir before transitioning to secular music. Her powerful, soulful voice and emotive delivery made her one of the most popular and influential vocalists of her time.

Washington's impact extended beyond her own music as well. She was an inspiration to many other singers, including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Natalie Cole, who have all cited her as a major influence on their own work.
