Al Hirt, also known as "Jumbo" due to his impressive physical stature, was an American jazz trumpeter and bandleader. Born on November 2, 1922, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Hirt's love for music began at a tender age. He started playing the trumpet at nine and went on to study under the renowned cornet player, Sidney Crosby.

Hirt's professional career spanned over five decades, during which he played with some of the most iconic names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. His band, "Al Hirt and his Tuxedo Junction Orchestra," was a staple on the New Orleans jazz scene, playing at popular clubs like the famous French Quarter's Preservation Hall. In addition to his work with other notable artists, Hirt also recorded several albums under his own name.

In 1968, Hirt reached new heights of success when he performed at the White House for President Lyndon B. Johnson and his guests. This honor marked a milestone in his illustrious career, solidifying his position as one of the most respected and beloved trumpeters in jazz. Al Hirt passed away on April 28, 1999, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
