Alex Chilton was an American singer-songwriter and musician best known as a member of the power pop bands Big Star and The Box Tops. Born on March 28, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee, Chilton's music career spanned over four decades, with his unique blend of jangle-pop and melodic songwriting earning him a cult following.
Chilton's most notable work was with Big Star, which formed in the early 1970s. The band released three critically acclaimed albums, including Radio City, September of '67, and Third/Sister Lovers. These records showcased Chilton's ability to craft catchy, hook-laden songs with a distinctively Memphis flavor.
In addition to his work with Big Star, Chilton released several solo albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His music often explored themes of love, relationships, and introspection, with a focus on melodic songcraft and poetic lyrics. Despite struggling with commercial success during his lifetime, Alex Chilton's influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary musicians, including Paul Westerberg, R.E.M., and Teenage Fanclub.
