Charles Earland was an American jazz organist and composer born on June 2, 1938. Known for his soulful and energetic playing style, Earland's music spanned a wide range of genres, from hard bop to soul jazz. He began his career in the early 1960s as a pianist, but later switched to the Hammond organ due to its versatility and expressiveness.
Eearand was also an accomplished composer and arranger, with credits on numerous albums by other artists including Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, and Hank Crawford. His own recordings, such as Soul Crib (1967) and From the Bottom of My Heart (1974), showcased his unique blend of jazz, funk, and gospel influences.
A highly respected figure in the jazz community, Earland was a sought-after sideman and bandleader throughout his career. He performed with many notable musicians, including Charles Kynard, Ronnie Laws, and Grover Washington Jr., and recorded for several prominent labels, including Prestige and Muse Records. Despite passing away on April 11, 1999, Charles Earland's legacy continues to inspire new generations of jazz musicians and fans alike.
