Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, formed in 1993 by Shagrath (vocals and guitar) and Silenoz (guitar). The name "Dimmu Borgir" roughly translates to "wooden palisade" or "fortress of the woods", which reflects the band's dark and mystical themes. Over the years, Dimmu Borgir has evolved from a raw black metal sound to incorporating symphonic elements, orchestral arrangements, and even operatic vocals.

The band's music often explores themes of mythology, Norse paganism, and fantasy literature. Their songs are known for their complex structures, featuring abrupt changes in tempo and mood, as well as Shagrath's distinctive vocal style, which blends clean singing with black metal screams. Dimmu Borgir has released 11 full-length albums to date, including the critically acclaimed "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" and "Innocence & Tragedy".

Despite their commercial success, Dimmu Borgir has been involved in several controversies throughout their career, including allegations of anti-Christian sentiment and accusations of promoting Satanism. However, the band members have consistently denied these claims, stating that their music is meant to explore themes of individual freedom and rebellion rather than promote any particular ideology or belief system. As a result, Dimmu Borgir remains one of the most influential and polarizing bands in the black metal genre.
