Dizzy Gillespie was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and singer. He was one of the most important figures in jazz history and a pioneer for bebop, a genre that revolutionized the music scene. Born John Birks Gillespie on October 21, 1917, in Cheraw, South Carolina, he began playing the trumpet at age 12.

Gillespie's early influences included Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, but it was his time with Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman that helped shape his unique style. He went on to form his own big band, which featured many of the era's most talented musicians, including Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, and John Coltrane. Gillespie was also a prolific composer, penning over 200 pieces throughout his career, including "A Night in Tunisia" and "Salt Peanuts."

In addition to his contributions to jazz, Gillespie was an advocate for civil rights and social justice. He participated in the historic Newport Jazz Festival in 1965 and was one of the key figures involved in the creation of the United Nations' International Jazz Day. Throughout his life, he continued to perform and compose until his passing on January 6, 1993.
