Born in 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama, Williams began his musical career at a young age, singing and playing guitar on local radio stations. His early success led to a recording contract with MGM Records, and in 1947, he released his debut single "Move It On Over," which reached the top of the country music charts.

Throughout his career, Williams wrote and recorded many iconic songs, including "Hey, Good Lookin'," "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." His music was characterized by its raw emotion, poetic lyrics, and soaring vocals. Despite his struggles with addiction and personal demons, Williams remained a beloved figure in country music until his untimely death at age 29.
