Incantation is an American death metal band formed in 1989 by guitarist John McLaughlin and vocalist Paul Ryan. The band's early work was characterized by its fast-paced, aggressive style and dark, often occult-inspired lyrics. With the release of their debut album "Blasphemy" in 1990, Incantation established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the burgeoning death metal scene.

Throughout the 1990s, Incantation continued to evolve and refine their sound, incorporating elements of black metal and grindcore into their music. The band's second album "Mortal Throne of Darkness" (1992) is often cited as a landmark release in the development of deathgrind, a subgenre that blends the intensity of death metal with the ferocity of grindcore.
