John Joseph "Johnny" Thunders was an American punk rock musician and songwriter, best known as the co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist of the New York City-based punk rock band The Heartbreakers. Born on July 25, 1952, in Queens, New York, Thunders grew up surrounded by music, influenced by the likes of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry.
Thunders' unique blend of proto-punk and glam rock helped shape the sound of The Heartbreakers, which formed in 1975. With his signature growl and distinctive stage presence, he became an integral part of the early punk rock scene, sharing the stage with fellow icons like Iggy Pop and David Johansen. His lyrics often reflected his own struggles with addiction and personal demons, resonating deeply with fans.
Despite his tumultuous life and career, Thunders left a lasting impact on the world of punk rock. His music continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
