Roky Erickson was an American musician and songwriter who was a key figure in the development of the Austin-based psychedelic rock scene of the 1960s. Born Rocky Burkholder on March 15, 1947, in Clear Lake, Iowa, Erickson grew up in Texas, where he formed the band The 13th Floor Elevators in the early 1960s. With his distinctive voice and songwriting style, which blended elements of rock, country, and psychedelia, Erickson became a major influence on the development of punk rock and alternative music.

In the 1970s, Erickson's life took a dramatic turn when he was institutionalized for several years due to his struggles with mental health issues. During this time, he continued to write and record music, often working with fellow musicians who would later go on to form bands like R.E.M. and The Butthole Surfers. When Erickson emerged from the institution in the early 1980s, he began a new chapter in his career, releasing critically acclaimed albums such as "The Evil One" and "Gremlins Have Pictures". His music continued to evolve, incorporating elements of country, blues, and folk.

Roky Erickson's legacy extends far beyond his own music. He was an inspiration to generations of musicians, including David Bowie, The White Stripes, and Queens of the Stone Age.
