Formed in 1979 by singer-songwriter Dave Ball and musician Richard James Burgess, Soft Cell was a British duo that blended art rock, synthpop, and electronic music with lyrics that often explored themes of love, desire, and social commentary. Their unique sound, characterized by Burgess's distinctive vocals and the use of synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronic instruments, helped to define the early 1980s new wave and post-punk era.

Soft Cell's debut single, "Memorabilia," was released in 1981 and became a surprise hit, reaching the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. This success led to their breakthrough album, Nights in White Satin, which featured the iconic hit singles "Tainted Love" and "Bedsitter Games." The duo's subsequent albums, including Non-Stop Erotic Caress and The Art of Falling Apart, continued to explore their distinctive sound and themes, cementing Soft Cell's reputation as a pioneering force in electronic music.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Soft Cell went on hiatus, with Burgess pursuing other musical projects. However, in 2001, the duo reformed and released the album Mu, which featured a more experimental and atmospheric sound. Although they have not released new music since then, Soft Cell's influence can be heard in many contemporary electronic and synthpop acts, and their legacy as pioneers of the genre remains unwavering.
