Soul Asylum is an American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1983. The band's original lineup consisted of Dave Pirner (vocals, guitar), Dan Murphy (guitar), Karl Mueller (bass) and Greg Williamson (drums). Over the years, Soul Asylum has undergone several lineup changes, with Pirner being the sole constant member.

Soul Asylum rose to fame in the mid-1990s with their hit single "Runaway Train", which reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was featured on their album Closer, which also included other popular tracks like "Misery" and "Can't Take the Heat". Their music is a blend of alternative rock, punk, and grunge, characterized by Pirner's distinctive vocals and lyrics that often focus on themes of social commentary and personal struggle.

Soul Asylum has released several albums throughout their career, including Time's Incinerator, Prior to the Wreckage, and The Silver Lining.
