Thelonious Sphere Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer who was one of the most influential figures in jazz history. Born on October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Monk began his musical career playing piano at a young age and later became known for his unique, unorthodox style that blended classical music with blues and swing.

Monk's compositions were characterized by their complexity, humor, and use of unexpected harmonies. He was a prolific composer, writing over 70 songs during his lifetime, including famous pieces like "Round Midnight," "Blue Monk," and "Straight, No Chaser." His music often featured unexpected chord changes, irregular time signatures, and a strong sense of swing.

Throughout his career, Monk collaborated with many other jazz greats, including John Coltrane, Charlie Rouse, and Oscar Pettiford. He was also a respected educator, teaching at the New School in New York City and leading workshops around the world. Despite struggling with mental health issues and facing racial discrimination throughout his life, Monk remained true to his art and continued to create music until his death on February 17, 1982.
